AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Florida has the worst affordable housing crisis in the nation, with hundreds of thousands of people working but unable to afford to pay rent or buy their own home because of the low wages. Florida has a solution crafted years ago: The Sadowski Housing Trust Fund. Unfortunately, every year our legislature raids those funds to pay for pet projects and corporate income tax cuts. This year we fought to keep the fund by supporting SB 70, which would end the raids, and requesting they not raid the fund this year. Unfortunately, of the $332 million in the fund this year, only $200 million was allocated and the rest was taken for other priorities, adding to the nearly $2 Billion taken over the past decade. Shelter is one of the most important basic needs of our community and we will continue to fight for it.
