We are concerned with the erosion of democracy and its institutions in Puerto Rico, the United States and Latin America. Our voice and influence in the Diaspora should call out anti-democratic practices whether it is done through legislation or through institutions like the Fiscal Control Board imposed by Congress on the people of Puerto Rico.
Anti-democratic institutions like the Fiscal Control Board established by Congress have stripped the free remaining rights of all US citizens living in the island and forced hundreds of thousands to leave seeking better opportunities stateside.
This unelected board continues to implement austerity measures that are beating down the citizenry by implementing austerity measures that ultimately lead to waves of out-migration.
In Latin America, we have seen manipulation of elections, severe corruption, and abuse of power to impose policies that enrich a few and destroy a thriving middle class.
